What To Watch | July 6, 2013

Saturday, July 6th, 2013 | Car News | Comments Off

It’s a Saturday morning (or afternoon for some) and you’re just getting into the groove of things. Unfortunately, morning cartoons just don’t do it for you so here’s some of our favorite videos from YouTube that should keep you entertained as you recover from your hangover, late night with friends, or while frying up some bacon!

Monster Energy launched this awesome video story of a “Driftpocalypse” whereby it is a cops vs. robber storyline only with two turbocharged Triumph Daytona bikes putting out 204 hp and a lawman chasing them in a 850 hp X2R. This may be fantasy land, but it’s awesome!

Drifting is awesome especially when it is a full party on the west end of Canada. The Drift Union Invitational was held over two days in Penticton, British Columbia is by the looks of it was more sideways fun than anyone could ever want.

In case you missed round 2 from the Drift Mania Canadian Championship in St- Eustache, Quebec, here’s a simple recap.

Cops can never seem to catch speeding bikes, especially if they’re going 299 km/hr like this rider. There’s nothing better than watching the reaction of police as they try to catch the speeder with their laser guns and are left with shock ‘n awe… enjoy!

The festival of festivals, which takes place July 12 to 14, includes a Craft Beerfest, Motorfest, Adrenalinefest, Tastefest, Celebrationfest and Indyfest.

Making its debut on Canadian soil is Robby Gordon’s new Stadium Super Trucks concept, which joins the Motorfest portion of the event. Motorsports enthusiasts will enjoy the heart-pounding jumps and tricks done by high-powered off-road trucks.

Also new to the Honda Indy Toronto is the Rusty Wallace Karting Experience that, along with Frank’s RedHot BMX Stunt Show, is part of the Adrenalinefest activities. These rides focus on speed and precision for an unforgettable experience full of high-energy and adrenaline. Rides are available for purchase from gate open to close each day of the event weekend.

“If you haven’t been to the event in years, or have never been, this is the year to join us,” said Charlie Johnstone, President of Honda Indy Toronto. “There is something for everyone, both on and off the track. At the Honda Indy Toronto, the races and the entertainment go hand-in-hand to provide our guests with one of the most memorable and energy-packed sporting experiences in Canada.”

Craft Beerfest will celebrate local breweries Muskoka and Amsterdam who, for a second year, have announced a special collaborative beer to be served exclusively at the event. Brew masters take to the Craft Brew House to offer adult patrons an authentic craft beer experience with beer and food sampling.

In addition to food, beer and high-energy activities, fans can get closer to celebrity athletes with Celebrationfest, featuring drivers from each of the racing series at autograph sessions and podium ceremonies following each race in Victory Circle.

Fans will have the opportunity to check out the spectacle and excitement of the Honda Indy Toronto for free on Friday, July 12 at Fan Friday. For a fourth consecutive year, the Ontario Honda Dealer Association will cover the cost of admission in exchange for a donation to Make-A-Wish Canada. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday are still available at hondaindy.com/tickets.

Ertefa Meet | July 4, 2013

Ertefa Meet | July 4, 2013
Smartcentres Woodbridge
Vaughan, Ontario, Canada
July 4, 2013

The weather in our fair city of Toronto (and neighboring cities like Vaughan) has been less than ideal with rain, rain, and even more rain. We are now closing out the first week of July whereby it should be peak heat season and clear sky, however that isn’t always the case. It has been two weeks since the last Ertefa meet and although cancelled by them last week, people still showed up for the usual gathering. For those unfamiliar with Canadian weather, half the year is spent fighting the blistering cold and snow so when the warmer months come – nothing can stop us gear heads from getting out. It was a quiet night unusual for the crowd and not packed like previous times, but there was still plenty of eye candy to be had.

Ertefa Meet | July 4, 2013 (THUMBNAIL) 2

A Volkswagen rare in any part of the world let alone modified in Canada is this Eos coupe. De-badged, slammed (most likely on air ride), and sporting some blade wheels this thing looked good and yet was subtle enough to not draw attention to itself.

Ertefa Meet | July 4, 2013 (THUMBNAIL) 3

Are you a fan of vinyl wraps on cars? Does this blue chrome GT-R do it for you? To some it may be cool while otherwise (myself included) it is a bit over the top, but to each their own – right?

Ertefa Meet | July 4, 2013 (THUMBNAIL) 4

It has been a handful of years since I’ve spotted an early generation Mitsubishi Evolution. This 3rd gen is a ultra rare in North America and still packs the notorious 46G3 engine that produces loads of power.

Ertefa Meet | July 4, 2013 (THUMBNAIL) 5

This old school 2nd generation Volkswagen was clean as whistle. Fresh yellow paint, perfectly matched wheels, and yellow-tint fog lights. Gotta love the cleanliness of Euro cars by their builders.

Ertefa Meet | July 4, 2013 (THUMBNAIL) 6

Wow – simply cool. A VW Golf rocking a Jetta front end – does that make it a JetGol? Add to it the fighter-jet like side graphics and that intercooler poking out from the bottom… awesome build and concept! The rivet accents around the body panels and matte finish are also great touches.

Ertefa Meet | July 4, 2013 (THUMBNAIL) 7

Yup, someone even brought out The General Lee to the meet. For those too young to remember or even known, this vehicle (not this actual one) was driven by the Duke cousins in the television series The Dukes of Hazzard! Nothing screams more Americana than having an “01″ painted on the side of your orange Charger.

Ertefa Meet | July 4, 2013 (THUMBNAIL) 8

Donk! Bonk! Bubble! Whatever you call them, they were out at the meet making it seem like a scene from an Atlanta rap video. This things are absolutely awesome for being completely off the wall radical in every sense.

Ertefa Meet | July 4, 2013 (THUMBNAIL) 9

For the low-life fans, there were a few lowrides gathered together showing off their hydraulic awesomeness and perfect paint jobs, let alone immaculate interiors.

Ertefa Meet | July 4, 2013 (THUMBNAIL) 10

By far one of the coolest cars from the past is this Buick Riviera GS from roughly 1965 and packed a juicy V8 under that long hood. This is when car styling was at its best and when safety or aerodynamics didn’t matter. Nearly half a century later and this Riviera is still crazy cool!

Ertefa Meet | July 4, 2013 (THUMBNAIL) 11

Carm of Premiere Tire brought out his new project dressed in typical yellow attire, sporting red leather seats and black wheels. Rumor has it that some new rims are enroute for this build and we’re looking forward to seeing it completed. If there’s one person who knows their rims (and tires), it’s definitely Carm!

Ertefa Meet | July 4, 2013 (THUMBNAIL) 12

Rounding out the night was a selection of supercars, some of which attended the Run 1000 rally just the previous weekend. V12 Murcielago on the left, little Honda scooter in the middle, and a V10 Gallardo – what an usual group, no? One of these things definitely doesn’t belong!

Thankfully the weather held up and the crowd was tame (for once). Hopefully the same continues for the coming weeks and even more awesome rides come out to play.

Eager Anticipation of DTM Home Round at Norisring

Friday, July 5th, 2013 | Car News | Comments Off

  • Audi driver Mike Rockenfeller travels to Nuremberg as leader of the standings
  • Newcomer Jamie Green with best Norisring tally of all drivers
  • Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen supports Audi team

A full grandstand made of stone, thousands of Audi flags and a unique atmosphere between the Dutzendteich lake and the paddock: The entire Audi team is looking forward to the DTM home round with eager anticipation. With a strong performance by the whole squad the drivers and teams are aiming to bring Audi’s first victory at the Norisring since 2002 home to Ingolstadt.

Eager Anticipation of DTM Home Round at Norisring (2)

Only 75 kilometers, as the crow flies, separate the Audi headquarters in Ingolstadt and the race track in the heart of Nuremberg. Accordingly, there is a large fan community of employees and followers who support the Audi line-up year after year. In 2013, the Audi Sport Teams Abt Sportsline, Phoenix and Rosberg are leaving no stone unturned to give the ‘Audians’ a good reason to celebrate on Sunday.

The last Audi victory at the Norisring was clinched by Laurent Aiello in June 2002. His duel with DTM record champion Bernd Schneider across the entire race distance of 44 laps back then is still regarded as one of the most spectacular races in DTM history and ended in an advantage of 0.197 seconds. Although Mattias Ekström and Timo Scheider mounted the podium six times since then, another victory has not been clinched there to date. Newcomer Jamie Green is bringing four triumphs to the squad at the only city street race on the DTM calendar. The Briton won in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012, thus acquiring the nickname ‘Mister Norisring.’

Eager Anticipation of DTM Home Round at Norisring (3)

At the Norisring in particular, the Drag Reduction System (DRS), which allows the angle of the rear wing to be flattened by pushing a button on the steering wheel, will be an important factor in the battle for victory. Especially at the end of the long start-finish straight, the race drivers when braking into the Grundig turn have an ideal opportunity for overtaking. The option tires, which may only be used during the race, provide the strategists with another thrilling tactical tool. As the race track, which only has a length of 2.3 kilometers, uses roads with different types of asphalt and concrete surfaces that are normally open to regular traffic tires are a particularly interesting topic.

The Audi squad will be enjoying prominent support in a spirit of friendship by Tom Kristensen. The Le Mans record winner, who just won the legendary 24-hour race in France for the ninth time, is visiting his brand colleagues at the Norisring. Kristensen himself competed in the DTM from 2004 to 2009 and finished all of his six races in Nuremberg in the top eight. On the weekend, the Dane will be driving his Le Mans winning car, the Audi R18 e-tron quattro, across the race track for a few demo laps.

Eager Anticipation of DTM Home Round at Norisring (4)

Tickets for all DTM races of the 2013 season are available at www.audi-motorsport.com/dtm. Fans in many countries of the world can watch qualifying and the race live on the DTM’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/dtmint live. A total of 39 TV channels air live DTM coverage in 141 countries.

In Germany, as usual, ARD will broadcast live on “Das Erste:” Qualifying on Saturday (July 13) starting at 14:30, the race on Sunday (July 14) starting at 13:15.

SGR Carts and Coffee – Round 3

SGR Carts and Coffee – Round 3
Formula Kartways
Brampton, Ontario, Canada
July 4 , 2013

Round 3 of the SGR Carts and Coffee – Toronto series kicked off once again at Formula Kartways in Brampton, Ontario. AMF was once again back on the scene as a proud media partner to bring coverage and some prize packs for the lucky winners of the evening’s racers. Thankfully the weather was ideal outside bringing out nearly 20 cars for the show ‘n shine competition and many more for the BBQ that was happening.

SGR Carts and Coffee - Round 3 (2)

Spotted this clean black GTI parked up. Although plain looking to most, it has some awesome forged wheels, sticky rubber, suspension work done, and who knows how much power under the hood.

SGR Carts and Coffee - Round 3 (3)

For the more colourful crowd, this Honda Prelude was sure to please. Back in the day, this was the must-have car for tuners with its sleek lines and H22 engine.

SGR Carts and Coffee - Round 3 (4)

No car related event is complete without some German V8 showing its face. This C63 AMG is nothing short of perfection in every sense – looks, performance, and an erotic sound to any gear head’s ears.

SGR Carts and Coffee - Round 3 (5)

As the sun began to set a few cars parked up and let their audio systems take over. This group tends to roll together at every major event and meet, so be sure to keep an eye out for them.

SGR Carts and Coffee - Round 3 (6)

Inside Formula Kartways, a quick briefing was done for all drivers explaining the rules of conduct while on track. The competition would be run as previous rounds with a fastest lap qualifying session and then groupings based on such. There were a total of 28 drivers who entered the competition and a tie for pole position with a time of 24.26-seconds – now that’s a fast lap!

SGR Carts and Coffee - Round 3 (7)

The first heat quickly commenced with drivers eager to get out and carve corners. Who would take the checked? That was soon to be determined after the initial laps were scratched off. There were three additional heats there were run that night, all with tight groupings and back-to-back passing.

SGR Carts and Coffee - Round 3 (8)

The following heat got quite aggressive from the get go. Drivers were putting carts wheel to wheel throughout the corners and on the front straight. There were even a few collisions and the black flag has to be brought out as a warning. Racing is competitive by nature, but safety always comes first and a zero tolerance is always observed.

SGR Carts and Coffee - Round 3 (9)

Two wide around the last hairpin leading on the front straight – this is what SGR Carts and Coffee – Toronto is all about! Every round win goes towards the overall championship and these drivers weren’t about to let points get away that easily.

SGR Carts and Coffee - Round 3 (10)

The sheer intensity when behind the wheel of a cart is unlike any other. Check out #18 driver with arms holding on and muscles flexed – intense!

SGR Carts and Coffee - Round 3 (11)

A quick photo of the SGR crew just after the event just to show the type of silly folk that they are! Congratulations to the winners of round 3 for some tough racing action, by far the most aggressive thus far. Be sure check out round 4 happening August 8th, 2013 and come one, come all!

McLaren Automotive Chief Test Drive Rejoins Von Ryan Racing for 24-Hours of Spa

Friday, July 5th, 2013 | Car News | Comments Off

  • Von Ryan Racing to field a full Pro line-up for second assault on Total 24 Hours of Spa
  • Former Formula 1™ driver Bruno Senna joins his manager and McLaren Automotive chief test driver Chris Goodwin in the cockpit
  • Team regular Rob Barff completes the competitive line-up

The 2013 Total 24 Hours of Spa will see a grid of at least 10 examples of the McLaren 12C GT3 later this month, with McLaren GT customer team Von Ryan Racing returning for a second consecutive year, moving into the Pro category for the first time. The driver line-up will see McLaren Automotive chief test driver Chris Goodwin return to the team, having contested the headline event of the Blancpain Endurance Series last year, and he joins team regular and former teammate Rob Barff and ex-Formula 1™ driver Bruno Senna.

Goodwin returns to the cockpit of the striking #88 McLaren for the Total 24 Hours of Spa, in which he and Rob Barff claimed a hard-fought fourth place in the Pro-Am category on the first attempt, less than 30 seconds off a podium finish after a gruelling 24 hours.  For this year’s assault, the team is again led by former McLaren Formula 1 team manager Dave Ryan, with the support of Leon Price and Dragon Racing, and sees Goodwin and Barff reunited and joined for this one-off round of the Blancpain Endurance Series by Bruno Senna as part of his continued GT drive programme for 2013.

McLaren Automotive Chief Test Drive Rejoins Von Ryan Racing for 24-Hours of Spa (3)

The driver line-up is particularly special for Chris Goodwin, who has managed Bruno Senna’s career, starting in junior racing and through seasons in Formula 1™. Commenting on the line up for the Total 24 Hours of Spa, Goodwin explained: ‘It is a fantastic opportunity to tackle my favourite race again with Von Ryan Racing, and it’s great to be back in the car sharing with Rob Barff. He has been racing with the team throughout the season, and has been one of the quickest and most consistent drivers on the grid. Of course, I’m really looking forward to racing with Bruno as well. We have worked together for many years now, but we have never actually driven together before so this will be a new experience for both of us. I’ve watched him race at Spa many times in GP2, Formula 1™ and in GT cars, and know how quick he can be. It should be a fun weekend!’

Commenting on joining the team, Bruno Senna explained: ‘I have really enjoyed the experience of racing in GTs so far this season, but this will be my first race in a McLaren. Obviously it is a brand that my family has close links with, and I am really honoured to have the chance to have the opportunity to race the 12C GT3 in the 50th year of the team. I am really looking forward to racing with Chris as well. We have worked together for a number of years, and it will be a lot of fun to race alongside him, and with the Von Ryan Racing team we hope to be able to get a strong result after 24 Hours at one of my favourite race circuits.’

McLaren Automotive Chief Test Drive Rejoins Von Ryan Racing for 24-Hours of Spa (4)

Rob Barff, who has contested the opening three rounds of the Blancpain Endurance Series with Von Ryan Racing this season, explained: ‘The Total 24 Hours of Spa is a truly incredible event. It is the ultimate test of a car and a team in terms of durability and endurance, and we are using it as a way of showcasing the trackday operation in the Middle East run by Dragon Racing. I am very much looking forward to teaming back up with Chris after our strong result last year, and the addition of Bruno as our third driver puts us in a really strong position. An all Pro driver line-up is something new for the team, and the opposition is truly world class, but I am optimistic we can mount a credible challenge.’

McLaren Automotive Chief Test Drive Rejoins Von Ryan Racing for 24-Hours of Spa (5)

The Total 24 Hours of Spa gets underway at 16.30 (CEST) on Saturday, 27 July and will see more than 60 cars line up on the grid.
